Crooked Path Forge will be on-site demonstrating forging in a coal forge. It is owned and operated by Jordan Borstelmann, blacksmith, bladesmith, teacher, and part-time Viking. He has been a full time blacksmith since 2018, and offers classes on blacksmithing and bladesmithing in Gainesville FL, as well as producing his own custom work.
Jacksonville's very own Chilly Rhino will be playing awesome rock from the 90's and up, live. A local favorite, Chilly Rhino's duo will keep the crowd jamming while the judges take breaks between testing events.
Craft beer furnished by Legacy Ale Works. Located on the corner of US1 and Old. St. Augustine Rd., just 1 mile east of I-95, Legacy serves an eclectic collection of house-made craft beer, guest craft beers & wine as well as a pub style menu featuring an array of tasty appetizers & gourmet flatbreads. The Log Chop - 15 points
Five (5) solid hits into an elevated hardwood log. Blade edge is inspected for chips, rolls, and dulling, and considered in the judging. Damage to the log is not considered in the judging.
The Ammo Can Stab - 15 points
Three (3) strikes on the handle of the blade with a 20oz. dead blow hammer, tip first, into a steel ammo can. Tip will be inspected for bending, dulling, or rolling. Handles will be inspected for damage. Damage to the can is not considered in judging.
The Bend - 15 points
Blade is placed in a vice and bent to 20 degrees in each direction. Blade will be inspected to see if it returns to true and does not crack or break. Pass/fail (0 points for a bent or broken blade, or separated handle, 5 points for a pass). Blades unable to be bent by the judges in the vise will be awarded a pass (5 points).
The Pool Noodle Slice - 15 points
Five (5) aggressive slices with the blade against a vertical pool noodle with a bamboo center. Damage to the pool noodle & cleanliness of cuts is considered in the judging.
The Drop - 15 points
One (1) drop from a static 6’ vertical structure from a position where the blade is laying on its side. Blade will drop on a hard plywood flood, but may bounce. Efforts will be made to reduce damage after bounce. Any damage to overall construction of the blade is considered in judging.
Judges have a possible 10 points to award for aesthetics, and 10 points for degree of difficulty. Also, each judge has 5 discretionary points PER ROUND to grant across ALL BLADES for this category. Judges will inspect the blade on the following points: Difficulty and complexity of build (layers, design) Handle construction, fit and finish, pin design, comfort Edge geometry, overall shape, and grind A blade may receive a maximum score of 95 points, not including discretionary points, per round.
Aside from the above tests, the Judges also review the blade for aesthetics, degree of difficulty, and can award the blade discretionary points (5, per judge, overall, per round). For an example of a scorecard, see below.
